Duck-aholic asked I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?
And got the following answer:
Depends on how far away you plan to shoot, under 50 yards a good all around 4x would be fine, under 100 yards may want a variable powered scope, say a 3-9 or 4-12 if you are shooting beyond 100 a 4-12 to 6-18 power would work out well. Just buy a quality brand IE Nikon, Burris, Leopold. there are cheaper scopes than these but you get want you pay for in optics. My experience has been that Nikon offers the brightest image and clearest lenses for the money. Brightness pay dividends in lower light conditions, and Tasco and Simmons just don't have what it take in low light or clarity.
